According to the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation (TBI), the two victims were discovered Monday, July 6, 2026, after officers with the Newbern Police Department responded to a welfare check at a home in the 700 block of Maple Street.

When officers entered the residence, they found Akins and Haynes deceased inside the home. Both were pronounced dead at the scene.

Investigators also located a young child inside the residence. Authorities confirmed the child was unharmed and was safely placed in the care of family members following the incident.
