George E. Johnson Sr., the pioneering businessman who transformed a small hair care venture into one of America’s first Black-owned multimillion-dollar companies, has died at the age of 99. His family confirmed that he passed away peacefully at his home, bringing to a close a remarkable life defined by innovation, perseverance, and a lasting commitment to empowering Black communities.
Born in 1927 in Richton, Mississippi, Johnson spent his early years in Perry County during the era of racial segregation. His family later relocated to Chicago as part of the Great Migration, where he worked various jobs—including shining shoes and bussing tables—to help support his family. Those early experiences shaped the determination and work ethic that would later define his extraordinary career.
In 1954, Johnson founded Johnson Products Company, a groundbreaking business that revolutionized the beauty industry with products designed specifically for Black consumers. The company introduced household names such as Ultra Sheen and Afro Sheen, brands that celebrated Black beauty and identity while helping reshape the personal care market.
Johnson achieved another historic milestone in 1971 when Johnson Products became the first Black-owned company listed on the American Stock Exchange. The achievement marked a turning point in American business history, breaking long-standing corporate barriers and inspiring generations of Black entrepreneurs to pursue their own dreams of business ownership and economic success.
Beyond his accomplishments in business, Johnson was widely recognized for his philanthropic efforts. Throughout his life, he supported educational initiatives, community development programs, and projects aimed at expanding economic opportunities for underserved communities. His commitment to giving back reflected his belief that success should create opportunities for others.
In a statement, Johnson’s family remembered him as a visionary leader whose influence extended far beyond the business world.
“George’s life was a testament to the power of vision, determination and service. He inspired countless people through his leadership, generosity and unwavering belief in creating opportunities for others.”
News of his passing has prompted tributes from business leaders, community organizations, and admirers who have recognized his lasting contributions to entrepreneurship, economic empowerment, and Black business leadership. His legacy continues through the company he built, the barriers he broke, and the countless individuals inspired by his example.
George E. Johnson Sr. is survived by his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Funeral and memorial service arrangements have not yet been publicly announced by the family.
His passing marks the end of an extraordinary chapter in American business history, but his influence will continue to inspire future generations of entrepreneurs who dare to dream beyond the limitations of their time.
